Samsung Galaxy Nexus : Review

Review: Samsung Galaxy Nexus
As fans of Google's Android mobile software well know, each new version is named after a sugary treat, such as Gingerbread or Honeycomb.
SAN FRANCISCO: As fans of Google's Androidmobile software well know, each new version is named after a sugary treat, such as Gingerbreador Honeycomb. Android is about to get even sweeter with Ice Cream Sandwich - a smooth, feature-rich operating system that will run first on the delectable Samsung Galaxy Nexussmartphone.

The combination of Google's software and Samsung's hardware makes the Galaxy Nexus one of the best candidates to compete with Apple's latest iPhone, though its price is steep. It will be available Thursday in the US for $300 with a two-year Verizon Wireless contract.

Like the previous phone in the Nexus line, theNexus S, the Galaxy Nexus was jointly developed by Google Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. It features a slim frame with a large, curved glass screen that's comfortable for chatting with friends and excellent for watching videos. There are 32 gigabytes of built-in storage space on the Verizon version of the phone, but no external slot for a microSD memory card.

The screen, a pocket-busting 4.65 inches at the diagonal, makes the iPhone's 3.5-inches look diminutive. And despite the size, the Galaxy Nexus manages to weigh just 4.8 ounces, slightly less than Apple's offering.

On it, videos and Web pages looked crisp and bright, with rich colors. I started watching a video during testing - an HD copy of "The Help" that I rented from Google's Android Market - and had to force myself to break away to test other features of the device.

With the latest version of Android under the hood, the Galaxy Nexus is packed with new and improved features. Many of them are great; others are simply great in theory.

Overall, the software looks fresher and less cluttered. The virtual "buttons" that usually sit at the bottom of the screen have been redesigned. There's still a "home" and a "back" button, but no "menu" button to pull up various options within an app. Instead, there's now a "recent apps" button that shows what you've been doing lately on the phone.

Another neat change: The buttons are completely virtual, so they change directions when you flip the phone sideways and disappear when you're viewing photos or videos.

Other changes to Android include an overhaul of its virtual keyboard, meant to make it easier to type without messing up - something I've always had trouble with on the stock Android keyboard. I was often able to type more accurately than in the past, but sometimes still ended up with unintended words in my messages.

The Android browser and Gmail are updated, too. Gmail's new functions include the ability to search emails while offline, while the browser is zippier and has a "request desktop" option so you can check out webpages in their non-truncated desktop version.

One new feature that falls into the "great in theory" category is Face Unlock, which uses facial-recognition technology to unlock the phone from standby mode. To set it up, you take a picture of your face with the phone. Then, all you have to do to unlock the phone is stare at the screen after you press the power button.

Most of the time it didn't work, though, probably because the phone couldn't recognise my face from certain angles. I was also able to fool it by holding up a shot of my face on an iPhone. So much for security.

Ice Cream Sandwich also has Android Beam, which lets you share such content as a Web page, map or video between two Android phones by bringing the backs of the phones close together. It only works with phones that have this Android software and near-field communication technology, though, so unless you and your friend both buy the Galaxy Nexus you'll be out of luck at launch.

More immediately useful was the phone's 5-megapixel camera, which is the snappiest I've seen on any Android phone. There was almost no shutter lag between shots, even when I had just turned the camera on.

Still, I would have preferred a higher-resolution sensor-8-megapixel cameras are quickly becoming common on smartphones. In addition, photos I took could have been brighter, though this can be improved on somewhat by using some of the available editing options, including numerous color filters and adjustable contrast options.

Like the iPhone 4S and some other high-end smartphones, the Galaxy Nexus can record high-definition videos in 1080p - the best resolution you can get on a consumer camera. I had some fun taking sunset videos with a time-lapse feature, and there are some goofy filming effects to play around with, too.

And yes, you can make calls on the Galaxy Nexus. Its thin body and curved screen make it comfortable to hold against your ear, and calls generally sounded good.

Sadly, high-speed networks guzzle battery power like a milkshake, so I wasn't able to spend a ton of time using the device on a single battery charge.

The phone Google loaned me to test was a version that works with AT&T or T-Mobile, so I couldn't test its speed or battery life with the carrier actually selling it in the US, Verizon, or with its high-speed 4G network.

Using both T-Mobile's standard 3G and speedier HSPA+ networks, at least, I got about three hours and 15 minutes out of the Galaxy Nexus for surfing the Web, streaming a movie, sending instant messages, chatting on the phone and other activities. The phone got quite warm with all this use. Over Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network, it's possible that the phone's battery would drain even faster if you're doing a lot of downloading.

Another bummer: Verizon is blocking the Galaxy Nexus from supporting Google Wallet, which is supposed to allow the phone to be used to buy items in some stores by tapping it to payment terminals.

Generally, though, the Galaxy Nexus is a well-rounded smartphone that serves up a noticeably freshened-up version of Android with sleek hardware. Delicious, indeed.

PlayStation Vita: Sony

PlayStation Vita: Sony sells 321,000 units
Sony Corp shifted 321,400 units of the PlayStation Vita in Japan in its first two days on sale.
TOKYO: Sony Corp shifted 321,400 units of thePlayStation Vita, its new handheld game device, in Japan in its first two days on sale, research firm Enterbrain said on Tuesday.

That falls short of rival Nintendo Co Ltd's 3DS, which sold 371,000 in its first two days, Enterbrain said. Sales of the 3DS, however, slumped weeks after the launch, forcing Nintendo to slash the price and crushing its profit outlook for the year.

Sony seeks to avoid suffering a similar fate by offering a big slate of 24 games for the Vita at launch. But executives admit the real challenge will come in maintaining sales over the next few years.

Fans in Japan lined up to be among the first to pick up the latest portable game device, which kicked off a global rollout on Saturday. The Vita will be launched in the United States and Europe in February.

Sony's previous portable game device, the PS Portable, sold 166,000 units on the first day of sales in 2004. It has sold 73 million units to date.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

Xperia Arc S: When good looks are not enough
Stunning looks. Very good screen. And a polished Android experience. That’s Xperia Arc S looks at the first glance.
Stunning looks. Very good screen. And a polished Android experience. That's Xperia Arc S looks at the first glance. But is it enough to compete with the big boys in the highly-competitive Android market? To find the answer, ladies and gentlemen, read on...

Slim & sleek Plastic has never looked as beautiful as it does on Arc S. Just like its predecessor, Xperia Arc, the new high-end Android phone from Sony Ericsson has stunning looks, complete with a curve in the middle - hence the name Arc - and sleek, clean lines. Yet, for all its design goodness, the fact remains that it's all glossy plastic. This takes away some of the charm the phone has.

While looks are fine, detailed look into the design reveals a few shortcomings. I do not like the physical buttons on Arc S. My preference for touch-sensitive buttons aside - in my opinion it's a much cleaner design to have capacitive buttons - the three buttons (Home, Back and Options) on Arc S are too thin for my taste. They feel clunky and slightly difficult to use. Then, there is the camera button. It's too small and recessed to be comfortable, which is a pity considering that shutter release button is always a welcome addition to a smartphone. In fact, using camera button is so difficult that I preferred using 'touch-to-snap' for taking the pictures.

Power button too is on tinier side but because it's not going to be used too frequently, it's not much of an issue.

These are the issues that also afflicted Xperia Arc. In fact, Arc S nothing much but just a souped up version of Arc which, despite its design brilliance, fell a little short in terms of raw horsepower in the face of dual-core Android phones that launched in earlier this year.

Arc S still doesn't come with any dual-core processor but Sony Ericsson believes that for now a bump in processor speed from 1 Ghz to 1.4Ghz is ought to do the trick. GPU duty is handled by Adreno 205. RAM is still the same at 512MB and so is the screen size at 4.2 inches. Resolution is 480 x 854 pixels. Arc S has user accessible storage of just 320MB but an 8GB micro SD card has been bundled.

Fairly fast but low on features Arc S comes loaded with Abdroid 2.3 aka Gingerbread. The OS has been customized by Sony Ericsson with its own user interface called Timescape. Unlike what offered by its competitors, Sony Ericsson's custom UI has a minimalist design and is mostly focused around making Android look better. In my opinion it's a good approach to take because it goes well with the overall design of Arc S as well is light on the hardware of the phone.

In terms of performance, lack of a dual-core processor makes little difference. It's only during installing apps that you feel that phone could have done better with little more hardware. Performance is very smooth and polished. Animations in Timescape UI are pleasing and render well. Talking of performance, I must highlight the keyboard in Arc S. It's among the best in terms of predictive text and spacing that I have seen on an Android phone.

LCD screen, which utilizes Sony Ericsson's proprietary Bravia engine for mobiles, is bright and good but it lacks the vibrancy of AMOLED displays. The 8 megapixel rear camera is above average, especially when it comes to photographs taken indoors.

With location functions like navigation and places being an integral part of smartphone experience, I took special care to test GPS. It works very well and even under cloudy conditions managed to get good lock on satellites.

Battery life is also above average for a big Android phone. When used with 3G it is likely to last 10 to 12 hours. If you are on the EDGE you can easily expect a battery life of around 24 hours.

Nothing stands out The problem with Xperia Arc S is not what it offers in terms of performance and overall feel. The issue is with what it doesn't offer. Given the excellent optimization engineers of Sony Ericsson have done, Arc S rarely feels slow. But still, there is no denying the fact that a dual-core processor helps in certain circumstances, for example during installing apps, browsing several websites at the same time or multi-tasking. Better hardware also means that phone is likely to have longer relevance in the future.

Then, there is poor multimedia playback performance. Arc S has an HDMI port but its usefulness is limited because the codec and resolution support is quite poor for a high-end Android phone. Similarly, despite the high-end tag, there is no 1080P video recording, a feature that is standard on top Android phones.

Arc S is a very functional phone. It is fast, has a good UI and a decent design. Unfortunately, lack of standout features means that it's slightly over priced at Rs 28,000. The only reason why you should consider Arc S over similarly priced Android phones like Galaxy S II or HTC Sensation is its design - if you like it and don't mind the physical buttons - and the fact that Sony Ericsson has categorically said the phone will receive Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Android, pretty soon.

Reliance Infotel to Offer Tablet for 3,500

Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Infotel, which is the only company with pan India BWA (4G/Broadband wireless access) spectrum, will offer LTE tablets for as low as 3,500.

Reliance was planning to launch the cheap LTE tablets earlier. And there would be bundled plans accompanied by these low cost subsidized tablets for as low as 10 for one GB of data. The service will however be launched only by end of 2012.

This delay is mainly on account of the TD-LTE technology being not mature enough to be launched within 2011, with very few devices supporting the technology. There will be USB dongles, Wi-Fi LTE Modems apart from the Tablets, so that all sorts of people with all sorts of devices will be able to access its services.

The biggest threat of the service will be faced by 3G service provider who have paid much higher amount. For instance, RIL paid 13,000 crore for 20 MHz spectrum in all 22 circles while for just 5 MHz Bharti Airtel paid 12,295 crore for spectrum in just 13 circles.

Therefore the ability of 3G service providers to compete with RIL on price would be limited. Also facing a stiff competition would be the CDMA players like Reliance communication, Tata Communication and MTS, which will have to substantially lower their tariffs in order to compete and also device new strategies in terms of device subsidization.

Reliance Infotel is now working hard to devise strategies and the company is also in talks with several device makers for sourcing devices that suit different consumer segments.

The tablet sports two cameras, with the primary one featuring a 2 MP sensor. The phone includes Samsung’s integrated Social Hub and Music Hub, which allows the purchase and download of tracks and albums over-the-air.
The phone allows streamlined messaging feeds, enhanced on-the-go web browsing and Wi-Fi applications.
It also allows multi-tasking, Wi-Fi Direct, voice recognition and Near Field Communication (optional). Further, it offers advanced services such as photo and file sharing without internet networking, mobile payment and transport pass-card recharge.
The Korean company had first unveiled the Wave 3 along with Wave M and Wave Y earlier on August 30.
