Top 5 mobile phones under Rs 10,000 for October & November

This edition of our 'Top five mobile phones under Rs 10,000' has two smartphones that were earlier priced around Rs 15,000.

Samsung Galaxy Y S5360 @ Rs 7,000
It maintained its numero uno status in our last list of 'Best smartphones under Rs 10,000' purely on the basis of its specifications and price.

Currently priced at Rs 7,000, the Samsung Galaxy Y has impressive specifications like Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system with 830 MHz ARMv6 processor, 290 MB RAM and a 2 megapixel camera. In fact, it is one of the few smartphones under Rs 10,000 to feature Android 2.3, and that too with a powerful processor.

Galaxy Y comes with a 3 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen, Samsung's TouchWiz user interface and multi touch function. It has 180 MB internal memory which can be expanded by up to 32 GB. Other features include WiFi b/g/n with hotspot, Bluetooth v3.0 A2DP, a 1200 mAh battery, 3G and A-GPS, making it an ideal choice if you're on a budget.

LG Optimus Net P690 @ Rs 9,999

Not long ago this handset was priced around Rs 15,000 in India. However, several online retailers are selling this LG Optimus NET P690 for as low as Rs 9,999 now. This reduction is one of the prime factors for us to include this handset in this list.

That does not mean Optimus Net disappoints as far as specifications or performance is concerned. The Optimus Net comes with a 3.2 inch capacitive touch screen with accelerometer and proximity sensor for better gaming. It has an Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system powered by an 800 MHz Qualcomm processor. This is only the second handset to feature Android 2.3 with above 800MHz processor.

Its other features include a 3.15 megapixel camera, 32 GB expandable memory, WiFi b/g/n, WiFi Hotspot, DLNA capability, Li-ion 1500 mAh battery, A-GPS support etc.

Nokia E5 @ Rs 9,000

undefined

Nokia has close to 60 per cent market share in India and has a product in almost every category — be it the best feature phones or top of the line handsets. Though there are many more Nokia handsets within the Rs 5,000-Rs 10,000 price bracket, such as the Nokia C series X series phones, we zeroed in on the E5 for its specifications.

Available for around Rs 9,000, Nokia E5 runs Symbian S 60 operating system on an ARM 11 600MHz processor. Though Nokia has shifted focus to Windows Phone, it has promised to support Symbian for a couple of years to come. Besides, there are thousands of users in India who use Symbian devices and Nokia isn't likely to leave them in the lurch.

Nokia E5 has the best in the industry 5 megapixel camera with flash, 32 GB expandable memory slot, 2.36 inch display, 1200 mAh battery, A-GPS, Nokia Maps, Bluetooth, WiFi b/g etc.

Micromax A70 @ Rs 7,600

Notwithstanding its very reasonable price of Rs 7,600, Micromax A70 3G comes with Android 2.2 Froyo operating system and a 600 MHz ARMv6 Qualcomm processor. Its 3.2 touchscreen is a capacitive one that supports multi touch input.

A70 is the only handset in this list to feature dual cameras — a 5 megapixel camera at the back and a front facing VGA one. Other noted features of Micromax A70 include a 1450 mAh battery, 32 GB expandable memory option, WiFi b/g with hotspot feature and Bluetooth.

Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman @ Rs 6,250

Mix Walkman qualifies for this list for its uniqueness and overall specs.

As the name signifies, its key feature is its Walkman. Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman comes with a Zappin key to search music. When pressed, the Zappin key opens a preview of the next track and lets you decide whether it is a favourite you want to listen to or not. A Karaoke function also enables the vocal track from any song to be lowered instantly so you can sing along.

Though it's the only phone in this list to run on a Java operating system, it has a decent specification list with 3 inch scratch resistance display, 256 MB internal memory expandable memory up to 32 GB, WiFi, Bluetooth, 1000 mAh battery and 3.15 megapixel back camera.

It is priced at Rs 6,250, and is the cheapest phone in the list.

Facebook faces crackdown in Europe for selling users' secrets

London: Facebook is facing a crackdown in Europe for harvesting its users' personal information and "selling" the same to advertisers, a media report said.
The European Commission is planning to stop the way the popular social networking website "eavesdrops" on its users to gather information about their political opinions, sexuality, religious beliefs -- and even their whereabouts, 'The Sunday Telegraph' reported.
Using sophisticated software, Facebook collects information from people's activities on the social networking site -- whatever their individual privacy settings -- and make it available to advertisers, it claimed.
However, following concerns over the privacy implications of the practice, a new European Commission directive, is to be introduced in January, which will ban such advertising unless users specifically allow it, the newspaper said.
Even though most of the information it harvests is stored on computers in the USA, if Facebook fails to comply with the new legislation it may face legal action.
Viviane Reding, the vice-president of European Commission, said the directive would amend current European data protection laws in the light of technological advances and ensure consistency in how offending firms are dealt with across the EU.
"I call on service providers -- especially social media sites -- to be more transparent about how they operate. Users must know what data is collected and further processed (and) for what purposes."
Facebook has, however, denied the claims. A spokesman for the company said: "We do not share people's names with an advertiser without a person's explicit consent and we never sell personal information to third parties."

Bhanwari Devi case: CBI close to a breakthrough?

New Delhi: CBI is likely to make a "major" arrest in the Bhanwari Devi disappearance case this week as it claimed to have got some crucial leads.
Sources said the agency is likely to intensify grilling of some key suspects including Congress MLA Malkhan Singh who has been on the radar of sleuths and was close to sacked Rajasthan Minister Mahipal Maderna, another suspect, and Bhanwari Devi.
The CBI is desperately carrying out searches for any clue to the whereabouts of the 36-year-old nurse whose disappearance had stirred a political storm in Rajasthan resulting in the sacking of Maderna.
Besides Maderna, the agency is now focussing on the role of Malkhan Singh and his family in the alleged kidnapping of Bhanwari as it has repeatedly questioned Singh, his brother Parasram Bishnoi, sister-in-law Kusum, sister Indira Bishnoi and other relatives.
A team of Central Forensic Science Laboratory had visited a stone kiln in Bilara town and nearby areas in Jodhpur. CBI also grilled kiln owner Goverdhan, who is also a close associate of Maderna. Goverdhan's kiln is located in Pipar, they said.
Based on questioning and other leads, agency may make an important arrest in the case later this week, they said. Bhanwari Devi, an auxiliary nurse midwife at a sub-centre in Jaliwada village, around 120 km from here, is missing since September 1 and her husband Amar Chand has alleged that she was kidnapped at the behest of Maderna, who denied the charge.
A CD allegedly showing Maderna in compromising position with Bhanwari had come to light after she went missing from Jodhpur's Bilara area.

GPS device installed in trains to beat the foggy weather

A GPS-based technology, which will alert train drivers about an approaching signal during foggy weather conditions, will be installed in all passenger and freight trains in Delhi division from the end of this month.
The 'fog safe device' will be fitted to the trains operating between Delhi and Ambala, to begin with, said Additional Divisional Railway Manager of Delhi Division Sudhir Garg.
"The device will only alert the driver about the approaching signal," he said, adding, the device will be installed from November 30. The Delhi division handles roughly 300 passenger trains and about 200 freight trains per day.
The device, which has missed several deadlines, has undergone under extensive trials in various sections and has been customised as per the Railways' specifications, officials said.
Garg said in the second phase, the technology will be deployed in the Delhi-Ghaziabad section.
Foggy conditions, which are being witnessed rather early this season, have significantly hampered train movement, throwing schedules haywire. During the week, scores of trains have been cancelled and hundreds have been rescheduled.
Garg said they have also made some technical changes in the signalling system so that there are sufficient gaps between the trains to avoid any collision during poor visibility.

Einstein proven wrong? Experiment proves neutrinos travel faster than light

Washington: Neutrinos really travel faster than light, Italian scientists, who had recently detected the phenomenon, claimed following postive outcomes from tests carried out in an improved experimental setup.
However, more tests will be needed before the physics community accepts the revolutionary results, they said.
"The experiment OPERA (Oscillation Project with Emulsion-tracking Apparatus), thanks to a specially adapted CERN beam, has made an important test of consistency of its result," said Fernando Ferroni, president of the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), which runs the lab where the experiment was conducted.
"The positive outcome of the test makes us more confident in the result, although a final word can only be said by analogous measurements performed elsewhere in the world," Ferroni was quoted as saying by LiveScience.
In both runs of the OPERA experiment, a beam of neutrinos -- subatomic particles that don't interact with normal matter -- was sent from the CERN Laboratory in Geneva to the INFN Gran Sasso Lab near Rome, and arrived at their destination 60 nanoseconds faster than a beam of light would have done.
That's shocking, because much of modern physics relies on Einstein's theory that the speed of light is the universe's speed limit.
However, physicists around the world have pointed out several potential flaws that, when corrected, might reveal that OPERA's neutrinos are travelling at less astonishing speeds. But, the new test has addressed only one of those concerns, the researches said.
Thus, the OPERA team repeated their experiment using proton pulses that were 3,000 times briefer than last time, giving greater precision to the start time of neutrinos. With the beam tightened up, the neutrinos still arrived at Gran Sasso 60 nanoseconds faster than light would have.
"This test confirms the accuracy of OPERA's timing measurement, ruling out one potential source of systematic error," the INFN said.
However, many potential sources of error still remain. For example, Ronald van Elburg of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands has argued that the Italian scientists failed to account for the fact that the GPS satellite they used as their timekeeping device is moving.
If they had corrected for the motion of the satellite as Einstein's theory of special relativity requires, they would have measured the neutrinos arriving 64 nanoseconds later, van Elburg asserted.
The OPERA team responded that they had correctly used the GPS to synchronise their clocks at CERN and Gran Sasso. But, they now admit the possibility that there could be flaws in their timekeeping.
"One of the eventual systematic errors is now out of the way, but the search is not over. There are more checks of systematics currently under discussion, one of them could be a synchronisation of the time reference at CERN and Gran Sasso independently from the GPS, using possibly a fiber," said Jacques Martino, director of the National Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics of French CNRS.
Most physicists hope to see other groups, such as MINOS (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search) at Fermilab in Batavia, Ill., conduct an independent test of neutrino speeds with similar experimental setups.
"OPERA is to be congratulated for doing some important and sensitive checks, but independent checks are the way to go," said Rob Plunkett, co-spokesman for MINOS. According to the journal Nature, MINOS could be ready to conduct such a test in early 2012.

Cyrus Mistry named Ratan Tata's successor

Mumbai: Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata has appointed 43-year-old director of Tata Sons and Tata Elxsi (India) Cyrus Mistry his successor. Mistry will work with Ratan Tata over the next year and take over from him when Tata retires in December 2012.
The board of directors of Tata Sons at its meeting on Wednesday appointed Cyrus P Mistry as deputy chairman.
Endorsing the appointment, Ratan Tata said, "The appointment of Cyrus P Mistry as deputy chairman of Tata Sons is a good and far-sighted choice. He has been on the Board of Tata Sons since August 2006 and I have been impressed with the quality and caliber of his participation, his astute observations and his humility. He is intelligent and qualified to take on the responsibility being offered and I will be committed to working with him over the next year to give him the exposure, the involvement and the operating experience to equip him to undertake the full responsibility of the Group on my retirement."
Mistry, currently managing director of Shapoorji Pallonji Group, has been a director of Tata Sons since August 2006. Born on July 4, 1968, Mr Mistry graduated from the Imperial College, London with a BE in civil engineering. He also holds a masters degree in management from the London Business School, and is a fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Apart from the Tata Group, he also serves as a director on the board of several other companies, including Shapoorji Pallonji & Co, Forbes Gokak, Afcons Infrastructure and United Motors (India).
After his appointment as deputy chairman of Tata Sons, Mistry thanked the selection committee and the Board and said, "I feel deeply honoured by this appointment. I am aware that an enormous responsibility, with a great legacy, has been entrusted to me. I look forward to Mr Tata's guidance in the year ahead in meeting the expectations of the Group. I take this responsibility very seriously and in keeping with the values and ethics of the Tata Group I will undertake to legally dissociate myself from the management of my family businesses to avoid any issue of conflict of interest."
The five-member panel appointed by the Tata Sons board to find a successor to the chairman has seen its mandate evolve over time. Tata Sons had said while forming the committee to find a successor that the group would require someone with experience and exposure to direct its growth amidst the challenges of the global economy.
In May, the group said the selection committee had interviewed several candidates, both internal and external, but no final decision had been taken. Since then, the consensus within has been that the group is not yet ready for an expatriate leader.
According to sources, the panel which has had about six meetings so far in Bombay House has devised a structure within which the new boss would operate as it would be hard for an individual to fill the big shoes of Ratan Tata.
About 66% of the equity capital of Tata Sons is held by philanthropic trusts endowed by members of the Tata family. The biggest of these trusts are Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which were created by the families of the sons of Jamsetji Tata.
Various candidates, including Tata's half-brother and son-in-law of Pallonji Mistry, Noel Tata and PepsiCo Chairperson Indra Nooyi were speculated to succeed Tata.
Tata, who took over as Chairman in 1991 from JRD Tata, is responsible for bringing the group to the global map with the acquisitions of Corus Steel and Jaguar Land Rover.

Shweta Tiwari not a big fan of the show

Television actress and last season winner of Bigg Boss, Shweta Tiwari is not herself a big fan of the television reality show as she finds hardly anything interesting in it.

In fact, she says she has never really watched any episode of the show since only 'hatred' is shown to viewers while the 'fun-element' is edited.

"I have never watched any season of Bigg Boss because I don't find it interesting. I went into the house because the money they offered me was huge and there was no way I could say no to it. While I was there in the house, we used to play kho-kho every evening and had lots of fun but all they showed was fights and hatred," Shweta told PTI.

"Though Dolly Bindra was abusive but like everyone else, she had positive points too, but nobody was interested in that. Veena Malik used to recite to us verses from the Quran, she even learnt to chant the Gayatri mantra, but all this was never shown," she said.

Meanwhile, talking about her career and future plans, the actor says that she is open to any role that is exciting.

"I am not obsessed about doing films. I will not sit at home hoping for a film to come my way. Also, it is not like I am choosy about doing films. I don't ask which banner is making the film. What I look for is that the role should excite me. I don't want to be there just looking pretty and doing nothing," she said.

Shweta feels women get to dominate the small screen.

"I feel women are ruling the small screen while men rule the big screen. As most TV shows are women-centric, actresses get to perform strong women characters on small screen. Also, because there are more women who comprise the audience base for television shows...they sympathise, relate to the protagonists in daily soaps," she said.

Shweta who started her acting career in 1999 with the show Kaleerein shot to fame with Ekta Kapoor's serial Kasautii Zindagii Ki. Some of her other popular television serials include Karam, Kahin Kissi Roz, Kya Hadsa Kya Haqeeqat, Naaginn, among others.

Recently, she did an item number - My Katto Gilehri in Chirag Paswan's debut film Miley Naa Miley Hum.

Shweta would be seen next in a television show titled Parrvarish - Kuchh Khatti Kuch Meethi, which is based on parenting.

Her stint in Bollywood films include supporting roles in Anil Sharma's Madhoshi (2004), Benny And Babloo (2010) and Bin Bulaye Baraati this year. She has also appeared in some Bhojpuri films.

Sunny Leone

Porn star Sunny Leone is surely earning lots of accolades for her sweet nature and beauty. The Indo-Canadian babe is ruling the hearts and is being showered with compliments like ‘Damn cute’, ‘innocent’.
Porn star Sunny Leone has surely fulfilled all the expectations after entering the Bigg Boss house, but at the same time, she has stunned people by trying to hide her real yet bold profession.
Bigg Boss house is known to be a battle field, but the new entrant, Sunny Leone is the new peacemaker in the house.

Hyundai launches LPG variant of i10 model

With high petrol prices and rising interest rates turning prospective buyers wary of making a car purchase, auto majors have decided to roll out cost effective options in a bid to bring down running costs.
One such attempt came from Hyundai Motor on Tuesday when it launched the LPG variant of its bestselling i10 model.
Priced between Rs 4,16,144 and Rs 4,30,659 (ex-showroom Delhi), the car is powered by a 1.1 litre iRDE2 engine, can run on both LPG and petrol, and has a factory-fitted LPG kit.
"The LPG kit in i10 blue drive is impact resistant and is approved by the department of explosives," an official statement from the company said.
According to Hyundai, the car's LPG tank offers larger boot space than other LPG-fitted cars.
Other features of the i10 LPG include an alternator management system that can control delivery of power to the battery. This results in extended battery life and better mileage.
"The LPG version of our next-gen i10 is a viable alternative for customers looking at low running cost," said H.W. Park, managing director and chief executive, Hyundai Motor India Ltd.
"With separate petrol (35 litre) and LPG (34 litre) tanks, the customers have an option to choose from LPG and petrol modes," the company statement said.
