India Reaches 900 Million Lines

Bangalore: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said, the total number of telephone lines activated in India crossed the 900 million entries for the first time in September.

TRAI statistics show that at the end of September there were 33.312 million fixed lines in service while the mobile operators had activated 873.613 million connections, taking the total to 906.925 million.

It showed that in September well worn trends as fixed line penetration continued to fall and mobile penetration continued to rise, although at a more modest pace than earlier this year. The number of wire line connections dipped by 750,000, while the mobile operators, lead by 7.9 million new connections. It means lots of new connections, about 26,000 for each day in September, although the broadband sector is still disappointing. In September just 150,000 broadband connections were added, taking the country's total to 12.84 million.

While there may be more than 873 million mobile lines on the operators' books, hundreds of millions of those are no longer active. According to the TRAI's Visitor Location Register, a temporary database of SIM cards recorded by the operators' Home Location registers (HLRs) as having made an active connection to a mobile network, there were 617.76 million active mobile lines in September, equivalent to about 70 percent of the total number of lines activated.

Idea Cellular still has the highest proportion of active customers, with 91 percent of its registered lines active in September, while mobile market leader Bharti Airtel has 88.6 percent of its massive subscriber base currently active. Vodafone India is the only other operator with more than 80 percent of its stated subscriber base currently active in September.
